Camelot Group, a consortium that runs the United Kingdom's National Lottery, is proving that financial hard times can pay off for some.
The group posted full year results to March 31, 2009 that showed sales at £5.1 billion -- a £182.8 million year-over-year bump.
"Despite the challenge of preparing for the new license and some significant challenges in the wider market, we have been able to deliver the best National Lottery sales performance in a decade," said Dianne Thompson, the company's chief executive, in a prepared statement.
"Over the coming year we will be looking to consolidate our position as the most cost-effective lottery operator in Europe," she added.
For the year, Camelot saw sales of draw-based games – comprising Lotto, EuroMillions, Thunderball, Lotto HotPicks, Dream Number and Daily Play – increase by £71.3 million to £3.9 billion.
Non draw-based games sales went up by 10 percent, the group said.
