On Thursday, the Massachusetts Senate voted against allowing racetracks to host up to 2,500 slot machines.
According to the Associated Press, senators voted 31 to 6 rejecting the proposal for troubled dog and horse tracks to add the machines.
Supporters of the bill argue that it will save jobs and raise tax money, the news service said.
"We are very close to turning the corner here and having the final real debate, at which point we are going to have to come to grips with a whole series of policy questions," Stanley Rosenberg, state senator, was quoted by the Boston Globe as saying.
The Globe reported that the senate also rejected a proposal for a two-year delay on a dog racing ban that starts in 2010.
