Gaming Industry Observer

Since 1996, Michael Pollock’s Gaming Industry Observer has been the gold standard among industry trade publications. That is because they provide "Intelligence for the Gaming Industry." The award-winning, advertising-free newsletter spots, tracks and analyzes trends that will impact the near- and long-term future of gaming, including trends in politics, regulation, economics and finance, marketing and management.
Gaming Industry Observer
Gaming Industry Observer enjoys an influential readership, including corporate CEOs, slot manufacturer executives, regulators, legislators, attorneys, architects, investors, analysts and developers.

The analysis in Gaming Industry Observer is used by readers to benchmark performance at their properties, make investment decisions, chart the future for their companies, and understand the impact of regulation.

In its first year of publication, the newsletter received first-place honors for editorial excellence from the Newsletter and Electronic Publishers Foundation, competing against publications in virtually every industry. It has since been honored three times from that prestigious foundation.
No other trade publication focusing on casinos has received such an honor – and it received four such honors in its first decade of publication.

Attached is our analysis of Atlantic City gross gaming revenue for December 2008, Last 3 Months ended December 2008, and Last 12 Months ended December 2008, based on data released this afternoon by the New Jersey Casino Control Commission.

In addition to the data presented for each casino, there is a second page for each period that displays consolidated data for each casino operator, which are:  Colony Capital (Hilton, Resorts), Harrah's Entertainment (Bally's, Caesars, Harrah's, Showboat), Trump Entertainment Resorts (Trump Marina, Trump Plaza, Trump Taj Mahal), along with Boyd Gaming/MGM Mirage (Borgata) and (formerly) Columbia-Sussex (Tropicana).

Each sheet is formatted to print in the Excel file and there will be two pages per tab, or six in total. The PDF file contains comments regarding the results, along with a year-over-year comparative for the month of November.

Please note we found a file error in our Harrah's Simulcast revenue amounts since they resumed reporting such results in July. Our prior monthly reports showed a fixed value that overstated their cumulative totals in the early months, which then were understated in latter months, by varying amounts of several thousand dollars. These results have been corrected in December, last three months, and last twelve months. We apologize for any inconvenience.

Please contact me with any questions, comments, or concerns.

East Coast Slot Report

East Coast Slot Report, November 2008

Gaming Industry Observer GIO2 premium service subscribers -

Attached is our East Coast Slot Report© for November 2008, including separate tabs for results of the last 12 months (LTM) and last three months (L3M) ended November 2008. Please note the following:

  • We calculate the total East Coast daily win per unit using a weighted average methodology to account for the differences in number of days in the reporting periods used among the various states.
  • The Rhode Island Lottery does not report handle or calculate hold percentage according to industry norms. The Lottery says its video lottery terminals pay out at about 92 percent, but we must use the lower, official payout figures supplied by the Lottery.
  • The Sands Casino Hotel in Atlantic City permanently closed on November 11, 2006. Its results are now no longer reflected in the New Jersey total LTM variance figures.
  • Due to the use of fiscal calendars or weekly reporting in some jurisdictions, the comparative figures for month ended November 2008 reflect differing number of days, as follows:  Delaware, 35 days for November this year versus 28 days for last. In such jurisdictions, when the number of days varies for the month, year-over-year, then the percentage variance indicates the variance in the average daily figures (drop and win) so as to normalize the figures.

Midwest Slot Report, December 2008
1/29/2009

Gaming Industry Observer GIO2 premium service subscribers –

Please find attached Gaming Industry Observer’s monthly Midwest Slot Report©, which covers the key metrics for all Midwestern (as we have liberally defined “Midwest”) jurisdictions that publicly report gross slot revenue and related data. We include Louisiana and Oklahoma win-only figures and the aggregate data of two states – Mississippi and South Dakota – that publicly report jurisdictional or regional data, but not property data.

Also note the following:

·       Michigan does not separate slot data from the gross gaming revenues, so we must omit Michigan from this report.

·       Louisiana does not separate slot and table data, but we can use the Louisiana data from racinos – which have only slots.

·       Those states that do not report handle are excluded from the total when calculating the Midwest hold.

·       Illinois, Mississippi, and Missouri typically lag one month behind other jurisdictions in reporting slot statistics. Accordingly, we do not include them in the most-recent-month tabs, but do update the previous month’s report with their totals included in separate tabs.

As always, we welcome your feedback on our reports and services.
